The title is possibly a play on "Gottes Werk und Teufels Beitrag", the German title of John Irving's The Cider House Rules.
It is Irving's sixth published novel, and has been adapted into a film of the same name and a stage play by Peter Parnell.

In The Cider House Rules, a novel by John Irving addressing the issue of abortion rights, one of the women seeking abortion and an improperly run abortion clinic both use the phrase to confront Dr. Larch, a doctor who knows how to perform the procedure but thus far has abstained in order to avoid breaking the law.
Additionally, Jack loses the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor to Michael Caine, who also won for The Cider House Rules that year.
