Le diable dans le beffroi (The Devil in the Belfry) is an unfinished comic opera in one act by Claude Debussy to his own libretto, based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Devil in the Belfry.

The story was also the subject of an opera by Italian composer Adriano Lualdi, premiered in 1925.

There are many famous illustrations for this short tale, including one is by the Italian engraver Alberto Martini, which is very accurate in describing the final moment, and another by the Belgian artist James Ensor, which illustrates the moment when the stranger arrives in town.

The title of the rock group Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's 2010 album Beat the Devil's Tattoo was derived from a line in The Devil in the Belfry.

He was a frequent contributor to musical journals and debates and collaborated with Mascagni and Toscanini, who directed Lualdiā€™s composition Il diavolo nel campanile, based on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Devil in the Belfry."
