Jessica Blank, who is married to Erik Jensen, got the idea for the play when she moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota to New York City.

It was based on a successful stage play of the same name written by Erik Jensen and Jessica Blank and first aired on the former CourtTV cable television network on January 27, 2005.
The play and made-for cable television film, The Exonerated, features Witness to Innocence members Delbert Tibbs (played by Delroy Lindo) and David Keaton (played by Danny Glover) as two of its characters.
She performed in the Los Angeles productions of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues with Nora Dunn of Saturday Night Live fame and Charlene Tilton, Joan by Linda Chambers, in which she portrayed Joan of Arc; Cookin' With Gas, with the Groundlings improvisation troupe, The Exonerated with critically acclaimed actor Aidan Quinn and The Who's Tommy at the La Jolla Playhouse.
