Pappenheim has garnered critical and popular acclaim for her work on Doctor Who due to the ethereal vocals she provided for the Doctor's leitmotif – which the producers described semi-seriously as "President Flavia (from The Five Doctors) singing out of the time vortex".
His best known roles include Robert Hastings during the final series of Howards' Way, violent P.E. teacher Mr. Hicks in Grange Hill and the Castellan in two Doctor Who stories, Arc of Infinity and The Five Doctors.
The Five Doctors, a 1983 television serial featuring the first five versions of the Doctor
The Fifth Doctor's sequence in the novel The Eight Doctors – featuring the Eighth Doctor going through his own past to meet and assist his other selves – takes place after this episode, the Fifth Doctor travelling to the Eye of Orion to continue their earlier holiday only to be attacked by a renegade Time Lord from the Eighth Doctor's era using the Timescoop, forcing the two Doctors to defeat a Raston Warrior Robot and a Sontaran squadron.
In the concluding scenes, Sarah Jane and the Doctor each tell the other not to forget them: this same exchange took place in The Hand of Fear, as Sarah Jane left the TARDIS for the final time until The Five Doctors.
