He was a proponent (from around 1925) of The Ghan railway to Alice Springs and rode in the VIP carriage during the inaugural journey.
This route later became the path of the overland telegraph and then The Ghan railway.
The modern Ghan has featured in a recent episode of Channel 5 Television's series Chris Tarrant: Extreme Railways.
