Clive Barker's horror novella The Hellbound Heart (later adapted into a movie Hellraiser, followed by numerous original sequels) centered around Lemarchand's box which appears to be such a puzzle box but in fact opens the gates to another dimension when manipulated.
Originally it was intended to be the title of a selection of short stories, including a novella-sized story that would have been a sequel to his groundbreaking horror story, first told in a novella called The Hellbound Heart, and then in a highly successful feature film called Hellraiser.

The attempt failed when he brought forth 'the Surgeons' (although it is never confirmed, it is heavily implied that these were the Cenobites from Barker's earlier work 'The Hellbound Heart' and its subsequent film adaptation 'Hellraiser')who proceeded to fillet him.
