As a respected songwriter he moved to Nashville in the 90’s to help write songs for Raul Malo and The Mavericks; contributing to the country band’s Grammy-award winning playlists writing for their song “Things I Cannot Change.”

In the early 1960s, Merle Haggard and Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, among others, brought the Bakersfield sound to mainstream audiences, and it soon became one of the most popular kinds of country music, also influencing later country stars such as Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart, Brad Paisley, The Mavericks, and The Derailers.

In April 2008, hours before Game 3 of the Mavericks' first-round series with the New Orleans Hornets, Howard told Michael Irvin in an interview on ESPN Radio 103.3 FM that he smoked marijuana in the offseason, and that while he would not smoke during the season even if the NBA did not conduct random testing, he did not "think that's stopping me from doing my job."
On May 24, 2012, the Mavericks extended Head Coach Scott Hillman's contract for two additional seasons through the 2013-14 season.
Needing a spark to the offense, coach Rick Carlisle subbed Beaubois in and he led them back into the game scoring 16 points, however the Mavericks lost the game and series.
