From pre-revolutionary times, Lentulov was actively involved in various theatrical projects, designing for plays in the Kamerny Theatre (The Merry Wives of Windsor, 1916) and contributing sets for a production of Scriabin's Prometheus in the Bolshoi Theatre in 1919.
Although Verdi's aim to write the music for an opera based on Shakespeare's King Lear never came to anything, (except that a libretto for Re Lear does exist), Boito provided subtle and resonant libretti for Verdi's last masterpieces, Otello in 1887 (which was based on Shakespeare's play Othello) and then Falstaff in 1893, the composer's second comedy, based on The Merry Wives of Windsor and parts of Henry IV.
It has been noted that the play The Merry Wives of Windsor displays a knowledge of local towns, a Windsor inn, and a local tale called Herne the Hunter.

His studies led to a three-year contract with the Deutsches Landes-Theater in Prague where he made his debut on 9 September 1907 in Otto Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor.
In recent summers, the Arb has been the site of dramatic performances of Shakespearean plays, including A Midsummer Night's Dream and Love's Labour's Lost; the June 2012 production was The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Hersee was the daughter of Henry Hersee (1820–1896), a teacher, critic for The Observer, librettist of Cowen's Pauline (1876), and translator of operas including The Merry Wives of Windsor, Carmen and Aida.
In 2010, Evans appeared in the role of Mistress Page in The Merry Wives of Windsor at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London.
