Alfred Cheetham

Cheetham enlisted in the Mercantile Marine and was serving as Second Officer on the S.S. Prunelle (London) when on 22 August 1918, he was killed when the ship was torpedoed in the North Sea by a German U-boat.

To the north may be seen the North Sea, the Elbe, the mouth of the Oste and the coast of Schleswig-Holstein with the Brunsbüttel nuclear power station and the large wind farm.

Diodora graeca

The specimens washed up on the beaches of the North Sea are almost certainly fossil (from the Pliocene and the Eemian), as this species no longer occurs in the south-eastern part of the North Sea.

Ludwig von Henk

In the Franco-Prussian War, he commanded the armored frigate König Wilhelm and after war's end became commander of the North Sea naval station.

Meldorf Bay

To the north is the North Sea resort of Büsum, to the south the seaside resort of Friedrichskoog, which does not however border directly onto Meldorf Bay.

ODECO rigs continued to rack up “firsts” in the industry in the 1970s, with Ocean Viking discovering the giant Ekofisk Field for Phillips Petroleum in the North Sea, and Ocean Victory discovering the Piper and Claymore fields, also in the North Sea, for Occidental Petroleum.

Outer Silver Pit

There is an older theory that the Outer Silver Pit was part of the valley of the great ice-age river Urstrom, during some of the Ice Ages when the Scandinavian ice did not meet the British ice, leaving the North Sea bed with open drainage northwards.

Notable events include the release in 2010 of Djangologists a DVD featuring a recording tribute to Django Reinhardt, and the 1992 live album The Rosenberg Trio: Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival, which captured the trio at an eclectic, youthful highpoint.

Runic inscriptions

A silver-plated copper disk, originally part of a sword-belt, found at Liebenau, Lower Saxony with an early 5th-century runic inscription (mostly illegible, interpreted as possibly reading rauzwih) is classed as the earliest South Germanic (German) inscription known by the RGA (vol. 6, p. 576); the location of Liebenau is close to the boundary of the North Sea and South Germanic zones.

The North Sea Scrolls is a collaborative project from Luke Haines, Cathal Coughlan, and Andrew Mueller which was performed live in 2011, with an album following in 2012.

The National Grid-owned Theddlethorpe Gas Terminal processes natural gas extracted from beneath the North Sea for use in the UK.

To Hull and Back

After getting lost in the North Sea again, the Trotters eventually find their way back to England by following the MV Norland, a ferry which goes from Zeebrugge to Hull.

Turritella communis

Fossil and subfossil shells of Turritella communis have been found in interglacial strata in the North Sea, from the Late Pliocene to the Quaternary Period.
