His best-known play, The One Day of the Year was written in 1958 for an amateur playwriting competition, inspired by an article in the University of Sydney newspaper Honi Soit lambasting Anzac Day.
Arthy made her professional debut with the Brisbane Repertory Theater in 1958 and from 1961 appeared onstage in Sydney - initially in Alan Seymour's The One Day of the Year - and later in Melbourne, a successful run of The Fantasticks.
