The event featured 3 stages with 60 bands, including Jackson Browne, Train, The Black Crowes, Zac Brown Band, The Shins, Primus, The Avett Brothers, Joan Jett, Cake, Jane's Addiction, The Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite.
Formed in 1991, the project was the brainchild of Marty Crandall, who went on to play keyboard and bass for The Shins, Lee Scrivner, who later formed Inviolet Row, and Clayton Scrivner, who went on to form The Rodeo Boys in Salt Lake City.
He has also directed music videos for The Shins, Broken Bells, Sleater- Kinney, and YACHT, while also collaborating on projects with artists such as Miranda July, James Mercer, Patton Oswalt, and Calvin Johnson.
A number of notable Portland musical acts have appeared on the PDX Pop Now! compilation or at the festival, including 50 Foot Wave, Alan Singley and Pants Machine, Blitzen Trapper, The Blow, The Decemberists, The Helio Sequence, Hockey (band), Lifesavas, M.Ward, Menomena, Mirah, Quasi, Sleater-Kinney, The Shins, The Shaky Hands, and The Thermals.
Building momentum on the success and release of their first music video for the song "Stickin' Around," the video was accepted at the Los Angeles Film Fest in May 2006, where it played alongside the likes of other such notable artists as Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The White Stripes, Nine Inch Nails, Death Cab for Cutie, The Go! Team, The Shins, and Bright Eyes.
In addition to creative ventures, Waxploitation has a longstanding commitment to philanthropy including their ongoing Causes album series has included songs from The Shins, LCD Soundsystem, Diplo, Death Cab for Cutie, Bloc Party, Devendra Banhart, The Decemberists, Sharon Jones & Dap Kings among many more.
