The Squids were created in 1989 in the Chicago basement of LaTour after LaTour and Spatafora attended a Dead Milkmen and Ramones concert at Metro Chicago.

The Squids performed on the closing night of the festival in the Cabana Room at the Spadina Hotel on Saturday June 17, 1995.
The Squids are referenced in the movie "Goats" (2012) written by Mark Poirier, starring David Duchovny and Vera Farmiga when the protagonist, Ellis, appears holding an original 12-inch green-vinyl Squids record and says, “I’ve been looking for this album for a long time.”
