Kawaguchi was reported inspired to create the manga after watching the 1992 documentary The War Room.
The recording was featured on the soundtrack to the 1993 documentary film The War Room starring James Carville and George Stephanopoulos on the 1992 presidential election when it was played over the closing credits.
It was produced by Frazer Pennebaker (The War Room; Al Franken: God Spoke) and Flora Lazar—Lazar graduated from Chicago's French Pastry School in 2007.

According to an article in the Brisbane Times, George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, and the rest of The Ides of March cast watched The War Room to “get their bearings” on their characters and life on the campaign trail.

In February 2013 he took over as host for former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm and the show, previously called "The War Room With Jennifer Granholm" became The War Room with Michael Shure until August 2013 when the show was ended with the rest of Current's live programming in preparation of the network's transition to Al Jazeera America.
He then spent two periods of 2 years each in the 1960s and 1980s consulting for the Institute for Defense Analyses (on loan from IBM), Recommendations were made which changed the IS support of the War Room activities in The Pentagon and studies made provided technology projections for future National Military Command System and World-Wide Military Command Systems.
