The development was built in the late 1950s by the The Workmen's Circle, a Jewish fraternal and mutual aid society with roots in the Socialist movement of the early 20th century, as a retirement community for its aging members.

Benjamin Schlesinger was, at various times, a member of the Workmen's Circle, Forward Association, Socialist Labor Party and Socialist Party.
In 1882, he famously developed the graphical method for analysing stress known as Mohr's circle and used it to propose an early theory of strength based on shear stress.
