To his credit Cetshwayo took the rejection, bided his time and on 1 September 1873 was crowned king by Theophilus Shepstone after the unusually natural death (for a Zulu monarch) of King Mpande.
He sent administrators, such as Theophilus Shepstone and Bartle Frere, to southern Africa to implement his system of confederation.
He married Jane Maidstone née Pearson on the 13th Aug 1849 in Pietermaritzburg and accompanied Theophilus Shepstone as adviser to the Transvaal in 1877.
