Thomas John Barnardo (1845–1905), an Irish/British philanthropist, founder of the Barnardo's charity for destitute children.
They decided to try to raise some money for charity and arranged a village fete to raise money for Dr Barnardos.
The museum was opened in 1990 in the premises of the former Dr Barnardo's Copperfield Road Ragged School.
