The title of Baron Middleton, of Middleton in the County of Warwick, was created in 1711 by Queen Anne as a hereditary barony in the Peerage of Great Britain for Thomas Willoughby, 2nd Baronet, of Wollaton in the County of Nottingham (1670–1729).
Willoughby is the third eldest child of Bridget and Percival Willoughby.

Willoughby a noted black sheep of the family, was sent, along with his guardian Henry Crout, to Cuper's Cove to mend his ways and help in establishing his fathers land ownership on the Bay de Verde Peninsula.
He was born at Middleton Hall, Middleton, Warwickshire, the second son of Francis Willughby, the famed mathematician and naturalist ( who preferred to be known by this aberrant spelling of the family name), and was educated at St Catharine's College, Cambridge and Jesus College, Cambridge.

Thomas Willoughby (1694–1742), brother of Francis Willoughby, 2nd Baron Middleton, married Elizabeth Sotheby of Birdsall, and their son Henry inherited the barony and Willoughby estates in Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire from his cousin in 1781.
Digby Willoughby, 7th Baron Middleton (29 November 1769 – 5 November 1856) was an English nobleman and sailor, the eldest son of Francis Willoughby of Hesley and Octavia Fisher, and grandson of Thomas Willoughby.
