Carasso and Galbisio are the only fraction of Bellinzona located on the west side of the Ticino river.
To the south of Giubiasco station, the Gotthard railway's main line commences its climb over the Monte Ceneri Pass, leaving the valley of the Ticino river that it has followed since it left the Gotthard Tunnel, and heading for Lake Lugano.
The Albergo Möwenpick Benjamin and the motorway service area Bellinzona-Sud, on highway A2, designed by architects Bruno Reichlin and Fabio Reinhart in 1989-1990; all the rooms have view to the Ticino river; on the highway the architecture resembles an old castle.
Near Cerano, it splits into two different streams: the first joins the Ticino River, while the second flows through the Lomellina (province of Pavia) until it merges with the Po River.
The race starts in Novate Milanese just to the north west of Milan and crosses the Ticino river at Vigevano after 40 kilometres, leaving the province of Lombardy and entering Piedmont.
