Carasso

Carasso and Galbisio are the only fraction of Bellinzona located on the west side of the Ticino river.

Contone

In the 16th Century, the Commandry estates went to the hospital in Lugano and in 1811 to the Antognini family of Bellinzona.

Cugnasco

Cugnasco was located at the crossroads of two important trade routes from Locarno to Bellinzona and from Cugnasco to Contone, which was near the so-called Porto sul Ticino, a river crossing.

Gnosca

In 1335 Gnosca is mentioned as a village in the county of Bellinzona, although part of the population was assumed for some time by the cathedral of Milan.

Preonzo

In 1335 it became a municipality in the County of Bellinzona.

The Bellinzona plant of FFS Cargo, a state-owned company, was established in 1884 near the Bellinzona railway station and soon became an important repair facility for the Swiss rail network.

Castione-Arbedo railway station

From 1907, Castione-Arbedo station was the principal interchange point between the Gotthard railway and the Bellinzona–Mesocco railway (BM), a metre gauge railway linking Bellinzona and various communities in the Val Mesolcina as far as Mesocco.
