Maccari was a student of the Institute of the Fine Arts in Siena together with Tito Sarrocchi, working in sculpture and helping complete the Monumento Pianigiani in Siena.
The old statues were replaced by copies in 1858 from Tito Sarrocchi and are now on display in the loggia of the Palazzo Pubblico.
For the cathedral of Massa Marittima, he sculpted a gothic monument for monsignor Traversi, with three statues and a bas-relief.
