On June 9, 1899, Armitage was one of three Biograph cameramen to photograph the heavyweight championship bout between Jim Jeffries and Tom Sharkey, the finished film running a then-record time of 135 minutes.

Unable to find a referee, at the last minute they called on former lawman Wyatt Earp.

The two fought a memorable twenty-five round bout on November 3, 1899 in Coney Island, New York.

It had been billed for the heavyweight championship of the world, as it was thought that the champion, James J. Corbett had relinquished the crown.
