A coup attempt against Aristide had taken place on 6 January, even before his inauguration, when Roger Lafontant, a Tonton Macoute leader under Duvalier, seized the provisional President Ertha Pascal-Trouillot and declared himself President.
That morning, he was arrested by the nation's notorious Tonton Macoutes secret police and is presumed to have been killed some time that month.
"Ton-Ton Macoute" was the name Papa Doc Duvalier used for his secret Police, who wreaked havoc in Haiti in 1950s.
