In 2005 the event featured former Environment Minister Michael Meacher, Bruce Kent from CND and Tony Juniper from Friends of the Earth.
In 2008 he was declared an Honorary Fellow by the Institute of Environmental Sciences and in 2013 an Honorary Fellow of the Society for the Environment.

In his book Macaw: The Race to Save the World's Rarest Bird he criticized the private holders of birds such as Antonio de Dios's Birds International, arguing that the Spix's Macaws should be returned to their native country, Brazil, for captive breeding and reintroduction to their natural habitat, which is still in decline.

This was supported by his successful "Big Ask" Campaign throughout 2005 and 2006, when he worked with Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke.

During 2011, he co-founded the ginger group Our Forests with other prominent environmentalists, including Jonathon Porritt and Tony Juniper, to provide a voice for the people of England in the future of the country's forests.
