During Lent, tradition tells us that the prostitutes of the town were sent to the other side of the Tormes River, so that the men of the town were not distracted during the religious observances.
The same year, in 1876, the factory was moved near to the river Tormes to the Convent of Saint Jerome.
Due to its characteristics this river does not provide the water supply to the population during summer and for this reason, at the end of 1960 the dam of Santa Teresa was constructed, with a capacity of 496 million cubic metres that the water supply in summer assured and regulated as well as it laminated the great avenues at time of winter.

The Almendra Dam, also known as Villarino Dam, in Salamanca, Spain, interrupts the course of the River Tormes five kilometres from the village from which it takes its name: Almendra (literally, almond).
