It was assembled by NUMMI in Fremont, in the U.S. state of California and marketed by Toyota in its home market of Japan, but curtailed after a disappointing sales volume of just over 10,000 units.

The Sprinter was directly replaced by the Toyota Allex and NUMMI would also commence export of the Corolla-derived Pontiac Vibe hatchback from the United States to the Japanese domestic market badged as the Toyota Voltz.
