Etchebar served as the place of residence of Nicholai Hel, the main character in Trevanian's novel Shibumi.
While in graduate school Couch served as assistant to, and was inspired by Rod Whitaker (pen name Trevanian), Radio, Television and Film Departmental Chair and author.
He taught at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, where he was chairman of the communications division.
