Beautiful, almost pristine nature and an abundance of cultural and historical monuments, together with wholesome, home-made food (especially that which uses home-grown ingredients, such as the highly-esteemed White Truffle), exquisite local wines, folklore (ancient music playing - lamentations and dances - balun, legends of citadels) and pearls of small towns on conically shaped hills (Roč, Hum, Vrh, and Sovinjak) attract tourists every year.
Agriculture, especially poultry and pig production are important in the surrounding area.with craft products and highly valued black truffles which are traded at seasonal markets during the winter.

Tom Michaels, who had written a Ph.D thesis on truffle cultivation, started cultivating truffles in the area in 2000 after observing that the area's limestone soil was similar to the soil of the Périgord region of France, where black truffles are native.
In 1992, the San Francisco Chronicle named Dassant Truffle Brownie Mix the best overall mix, beating out Pillsbury, Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker.
Ingredients vary; they may include butter, mushrooms, mustard, shallots, cream, truffles, meat stock, A1 Steak Sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.
It is also the name of a 2010 album by musical artist Oren Ambarchi with Jim O'Rourke and Keiji Haino (Black Truffle).
