The generic name is derived from Greek παλαιός (palaios) "old, ancient", and from Hatteria, a proposed common name and generic name (like Rhynchocephalus) to the Tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus).

Notable amongst these will be the Tuatara, the Little Spotted Kiwi, a subspecies of the carnivorous Powelliphanta snail, and a range of threatened plants endemic to the Wellington Region.
The Trust plans to "bring back to the ecosanctuary native species that would have been there in times past" including Kiwi, seabirds, Kākāriki, South Island robin, Saddleback, Kākā, native bats, Tuatara and Jewelled gecko.
