Based on his name Amenemhat Sobekhotep, it has been suggested that Sobekhotep was a son of the penultimate pharaoh of the 12th Dynasty, king Amenemhat IV.
In Manetho, however, a pharaoh called Sesostris occupied the same position as the known pharaoh Senusret III of the Twelfth Dynasty, and his name is now usually viewed as a corruption of Senwosret.
The workmen's village at el-Lahun was built and inhabited during the reign of Senusret II of the Twelfth Dynasty.
