During the First World War an airfield was established here, during late 1916 or early 1917, as a Home Defence airfield for night patrols.

Its eastern boundary follows the River Nene inland to Tydd Gote, where it turns to the west, passing near to the villages of Tydd St Mary and Sutton St James.
