His wife, Susan Margaret — usually referred to as Peggy — was sister of the theatre director Tyrone Guthrie and the moving force behind foundation of the Kilkenny Art Gallery Society.
That year, he won the Louis Applebaum Tyrone Guthrie Award for his musical contribution to the festival.

McIlrath's desire to establish both a training ground for professional theatre artists in Kansas City, and a venue in the city at which audiences could attend professional theatre rivaling the caliber of that produced in New York City, corresponded with the work of numerous other well-known members of the Regional Theatre Movement, such as Margo Jones, Zelda Fichandler, Michael Murray, and Tyrone Guthrie.
The 1938 film Vessel of Wrath, released in the U.S. as The Beachcomber, starred Charles Laughton as Ginger Ted, Elsa Lanchester as Miss Jones, Robert Newton as the Contrôleur, and Tyrone Guthrie as Reverend Jones.
