The village is believed to be located on the site of ancient Abel, whence flowed water to Sepphoris.
In 2007, there were tensions between the village and the nearby moshav of Tzippori, with the Bedouins accused of cattle rustling.
In later Christian traditions it is believed to be the birthplace of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where Saints Anna and Joachim once resided.

They built a fortress and watchtower atop the hill, overlooking Saffuriya, and dedicated it to Anne and Joachim, the parents of the Virgin Mary.
