In February 1983 Kirkpatrick was arrested on multiple charges including the murder of two policemen, two UDR soldiers, and Hugh McGinn, a Catholic member of the Territorial Army.
The IRA later claimed the murder was a mistake and that the intended target was Johnston's brother, whom they had supposed to be a member of the UDR.
