Hardwell Castle

It is situated in the civil parish of Compton Beauchamp in the Vale of White Horse, very close to the small settlements of both Compton Beauchamp and Knighton, 2 miles from Uffington and 1 mile from the hilltop Uffington Castle.

Withington, Shropshire

On the retirement of the last vicar of Withington the parish was joined to the parish of Upton Magna, then to Uffington and is now part of a team ministry.

Woolstone, Oxfordshire

The Church of England parish church of All Saints was built in about 1195 as a dependent chapel of Uffington.

In 1814 the Wroughtons sold Woolstone to Viscount Uffington, who in 1825 succeeded as 2nd Earl of Craven.


Archibald Ormsby-Gore

In the 1940s, Betjeman also wrote and illustrated a story for his children, entitled Archie and the Strict Baptists, in which the bear's sojourns at the family's successive homes in Uffington and Farnborough are fictionalised.
