Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, the president of Nigeria from 2007–2010, reportedly suffered from Churg–Strauss syndrome and died in office of complications of the disease.

In October 2008 he was dismissed by President Umaru Yar'Adua on 29 October 2008, with the Minister of Science and Technology Alhassan Bako Zaku appointed supervising minister for the National Sports Commission.

In a letter excerpted in the media, IBB is quoted as citing the "moral dilemma" of running against Umaru Yar'Adua, the younger brother of the late Shehu Yar'Adua (himself a former nominee to run for the Presidency during IBB's military dictatorship), as well as against General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, given IBB's close relationship with the latter two.
