"Umney's Last Case" was included as the third installment of TNT's Nightmares and Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, starring William H. Macy in a dual role as both Umney and the author.

He is also the author of Murdering Marlowe, about an imagined rivalry between William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, which was selected as a finalist for the GLAAD Media Awards of 2002, and of the 1987 Broadway play Sherlock's Last Case starring Frank Langella.
They would stay teamed for five more wins; Umney also scored twice as a gunner for Frank George Gibbons and another time for O.S. Harris.
The case, along with the Sandyford murder case, were mentioned in E.C. Bentley's 1920 detective story Trent's Last Case, and provided some of the inspiration for the novel's plot.
