In 1901 he was commanding the Chatham Sub-District and was a member of the United Service Club.
In 1905, he suffered a seizure and died while playing billiards at the United Service Club.
It was founded for the use of senior officers in the army and navy - those above the rank of Major or Commander - and the club was accordingly known to its members as "The Senior".
