During his university studies he was awarded the 1997 Carl Zeiss (Aust) Pty Ltd Award, the 1998 Kenneth B Ward Memorial Prize, and the 2000 University Medal in the Faculty of Health.
Hawker received his B.Sc. degree and University Medal in chemistry from the University of Queensland in 1984 and a Ph.D. in bioorganic chemistry from the University of Cambridge in 1988 under the supervision of Professor Sir Alan R. Battersby.
As Foundation Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of New South Wales from 1975 and emeritus from 1992 he established the Department of Theoretical Physics where a number of students received the university medal, with a record level of publications and where he supervised most of his 25 Ph.D. students.
The presentation was a particularly special occasion, because it was Ryan who, as president, created the University Medal in 1982, bestowing it first on Thomas T. Solley, director of the IU Art Museum.
She completed an undergraduate degree in literature and theatre at Griffith University, gained First Class Honours and the University Medal, and subsequently completed a doctorate in Creative Writing (2002) at the same university.
