The Bachelor of Education degree was first introduced by the University of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1963.
Professor Shenoy taught at Wadia College (Pune), the University of Ceylon, Gujarat University and the London School of Economics.

At the age of 22, he graduated from the University of Ceylon with Honours in Geography and was appointed as a Graduate Teacher in the same year.

A new school was opened by then Minister of Education by Major E. A. Nugawela on January 11, 1950 named as the Government Senior School at Thurstan Road (now known as Kumarathunga Munidasa Mawatha), on one side was the old Royal College Colombo established in 1835 and on the other side was the University of Ceylon which was of established in 1922.

During his career he held academic posts at the universities of University of Manchester (1951–6), Durham University (1956–92), the University of Ceylon and the University of Hong Kong, and was head of department at Durham where he remains an emeritus professor.
Upgraded to a faculty in 1942 with the establishment of the University of Ceylon that year, it was moved completely to Peradeniya in the early 1950s.
