The summer fishfly, Chauliodes pectinicornis, is perhaps the best-known of these in North America; its immense mating swarms in the Upper Mississippi River region fill the air on a few summer nights each year much like mayflies in certain regions of Europe, leaving millions of carcasses to be cleaned up the next day.
Inasmuch as the Wisconsin glaciation formed lobes that met (and blocked) where the Mississippi now flows, and given that huge amounts of glacial meltwater were flowing into the Driftless Area, and that there is no lakebed, it is assumed that there were instances of ice dams bursting.

Surveys from 1990-2002 added 47 sites in 9 new streams and 41 new lakes, mostly in the Otter Tail River system and the upper Mississippi River drainage.

Bridge — a former 1895 swing bridge over the upper Mississippi River between Inver Grove Heights and St. Paul Park, Minnesota, built for the South St. Paul Beltline Railroad, used by the Rock Island until 1980, also used for road traffic until 1999, and partially demolished in 2009
In the United States above St. Louis on the Upper Mississippi River and on other rivers such as the Illinois, Ohio, Arkansas, Tennessee and Cumberland, boats can handle only up to 15 barges due the size of lock chambers.
