It spawns in fine-leafed water plants, such as the Water Bladderwort, or in aquatic moss in the genus Fontinalis.
After they lay their eggs they die, living their young to feed on such plants as Utricularia minor and other Utricularia species.

As time went on, his hobby turned to a profession and Lowrie discovered and described numerous species (especially Drosera, Byblis and Utricularia), partly together with Neville Marchant.
The final volume includes the remaining sundews of Australia, together with native species of Aldrovanda, Byblis, Cephalotus, Nepenthes, and Utricularia.

Rice pointed out the omission of many Utricularia species ("only nineteen species are described, even though more than fifty species occur in Australia") and felt that the four-pages-per-species format was inadequate for treating some of the more "complicated taxa", like D. binata, U. dichotoma, and especially D. peltata (of which "only the Western Australia type was ever mentioned"—in the first volume).
U. cornigera was described in 2009 by Miloslav Studnička based on his study of the variation in cultivated plants labeled Utricularia reniformis and apparent different geographic ranges.
