The fjord can be reached by boat or seaplane, boats being either individually chartered from Ikerasak, or as part of the organized glacier sightseeing tour from Uummannaq.
Ukkusissat Heliport served by Air Greenland is the only aerodrome in the area, with twice-weekly connections to Uummannaq.
The main urban settlement today is Uummannaq, once an administrative center of a municipality which covered the entire catchment area of Uummannaq Fjord, and now part of the Qaasuitsup municipality of northwestern Greenland, the largest municipality in the country.
