In 1969, VCU’s first degree-granting year, Elisabeth Scott Bocock received the first diploma handed out at the commencement ceremony, a Bachelor of Arts in English.
After graduating from VCU with a degree in philosophy, he studied at the University of Richmond, where he received a master's degree, and then went on to the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Virginia, where he obtained his Ph.D. He then relocated to College Station, Texas where he became an assistant professor at Texas A&M University.
The VCU was created by SCI Systems in Huntsville, Alabama, and was based on technology licensed from the Votan company.
During former President Eugene P. Trani's administration, he was notable for saying VCU will not have football "on my watch."
VCU Rams women's volleyball, a varsity team also at VCU that represents the school in women's varsity competitions
