Van Kempen is a supervisor at a tea plantation named Ciranu in West Java.
Doussard began his studies at the Music Conservatory of Angers, and later at the Paris Conservatory, where he was a pupil of Jean Fournet, Paul Van Kempen, and Ferdinand Leitner.
Michiel van Kempen was or is editor of several magazines, including Uit de Kunst, Tegenspraak and Oso (magazine for Surinamese studies).
He also appeared as a soloist with such illustrious conductors as Sergiu Celibidache, Antonio Guarnieri, Carlo Maria Giulini, Igor Markevitch, Jonel Perlea, Paul van Kempen, Erich Leinsdorf, etc., and with other equally famous instrumentalists including Andrés Segovia, Alain Meunier and Dino Asciolla.
