Alexander Vandegrift (1887–1973), United States Marine Corps Commandant and general
Vandegrift's forces' next significant clashes with the Japanese occurred along the Matanikau River from 23–27 September and 6–9 October.
General Vandegrift carried on in command of the Corps when its next-designated commander for the invasion of Bougainville, Major General Charles D. Barrett, died following a fall from the balcony of his quarters in New Caledonia.
The squadron flew in support of Marines at Khe Sanh, Con Thien, Lao Bảo, Dong Ha, Gio Linh, The Rockpile, Vandegrift Combat Base, the Ben Hai and LZ Argon.
