The film, which was also announced to feature Keerthi Chawla and Gayathri in lead roles, was to be directed by newcomer Agasthiya Bharathi, who had previously apprenticed under Vasanth and Bhagyaraj.
Also produced by Maniratnam, the film introduced actor Sivakumar's eldest son Suriya, who played a leading role alongside Vijay and Simran.

Vasanth had earlier unsuccessfully tried to persuade Suriya to star in his previous film, Aasai, in 1995 but the actor's father insisted that Suriya was finally ready to act.

Initially, Vasanth roped in his lead hero from Aasai, Ajith Kumar and Vijay to play the lead roles though Ajith withdrew from the film three days before production began as a result of date problems.
