In 1930, during a public inquiry, the square was renamed Place Vauquelin, and a statue in the memory of Jean Vauquelin (1728–1772), was placed in the square.
Walkelin (or Walchelin) (died 1098) was the first Norman bishop of Winchester (Norman-French Vauquelin or Gauquelin).
Vauquelin was one of several officers serving in this expedition and was present at the raids against Maracaibo and Gibraltar in 1666 and Puerto de Cavallo and San Pedro in 1667.
