By the end of 1999, after the assassination of the former prime minister of Armenia Vazgen Sargsyan, the official name of the stadium became to be known as the Republican Stadium named after Vazgen Sargsyan.
After his assassination, Armenian Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan was referred to as the Sparapet in some popular songs, such as Alla Levonyan's "Sparapet", in reference to his military leadership in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Few year after the election, Ter-Petrosyan's closest "power minister" Vano Siradeghyan claimed in an interview that Ter-Petrosyan fell into a three-month depression and that he wanted Vazgen Sargsyan and Siradeghyan to resign.
