It is named for the German sculptor and woodcarver Veit Stoss.
The castle formerly contained a celebrated crucifix, previously thought to be by Veit Stoss but now attributed to the Danube school.

Born in Lübeck in the north of Germany, Berg possibly first worked as a sculptor in Veit Stoss's workshop in Nuremberg.
He probably started working in Kraków (from the connections of this city with Levoča at that time and from similarity of styles he could be a student of Veit Stoss), Sabinov, Banská Bystrica until he settled in Levoča around 1500 and married a daughter of an influential citizen.
