The species was last seen in 1911 and was rediscovered in 2009 in the Veragua Rainforest, in the province of Limón.

Felipa Colón de Toledo y Mosquera, 2nd duchess of la Vega, 2nd duchess of Veragua and 2nd Marquesa of Jamaica (ca. 1550 – Valladolid, Olmedo, Spain, 25 November 1577), was the second daughter and heiress of Luis Colón de Toledo, 1st Duke of Veragua, and his first wife María de Mosquera y Pasamonte.
After Miranda later designed his flag based on this conversation, he happily recalled seeing a fresco by Lazzaro Tavarone in the Palazzo Belimbau in Genoa that depicted Christopher Columbus unfurling a similar-coloured flag in Veragua during his fourth voyage.
Other provinces of this region during this era were Nueva Andalucia and Veragua or Castilla del Oro; the main city in Tierra Firme was Santa Maria La Antigua del Darién, now Darién, Panama, near at mouth of the Tarena river.
